Finish What You Start

One of the biggest frustrations I have as a coach is getting kids to finish.

They do everything right. They get to the right spot. They set their defender up perfectly. They make the right move, get to the rim, and then miss the layup. It makes me want to pull what little hair I have left out of my head.

And if I’m being honest, I see the same thing happen outside of basketball.

People start strong. They plan well. They prepare. They talk about what they’re going to do. And then, when it’s time to finish, they fall short.

Co-workers, friends, relatives. They get most of the way there and then don’t follow through.

This is one area where I’ll admit I’m borderline OCD. I can’t stand partially finished things. When I start something, I want it done. Sometimes that’s my strength. Sometimes it’s my downfall, because I don’t always have the patience to do things the right way. That’s a topic for another day.

Here are a few things that help me finish what I start.
